China, October 21, 2015, Amys AG (SIX: AMS), the world's leading supplier of high-performance analog ICs and sensors, today announced that it is a manufacturer of smart watches, bracelets and other space-constrained devices. Introducing a new NFC (Near Field Communication) solution that provides reliable support for contactless payments and ticketing.
The new AS3921 is a near field communication analog front end (AFE) with Amers Semiconductor's unique enhanced NFC technology. Compared to the use of traditional NFC, this solution can increase the available working field of NFC readers by up to 900%. This greatly enhances the reliability and perceived speed of NFC transactions, especially for smart watches, wristbands and other devices that can only accommodate very small antennas. This technology guarantees reliable NFC transmission when some antennas are smaller than non-contact cards or when NFC transmission operating conditions are difficult.
Optimized for space-constrained components, the AS3921 helps original equipment manufacturers implement simpler designs than traditional NFC-based controller architectures, enabling simpler, lower-cost solutions that take up board space The area is one-third smaller than the original, using fewer components and lower power consumption.
Under normal operation, the AS3921 requires only 12μA of current and has a power-saving safety element wake-up function that consumes less power than an NFC controller circuit that typically consumes 60uA or more.
The AS3921 is available in a very compact wafer level chip package (WL-CSP) measuring 2.115mm x 1.735mm, directly connecting the security components and requiring only a few external components. The AS3921 with enhanced NFC technology uses active load modulation: it produces an RFID card response that is synchronized with the reader's magnetic field. This makes the card-reader communication coupling factor an order of magnitude smaller than the passive load modulation (PLM) used by contactless cards.
Devices using the AS3921 and 100 mm2 antennas can achieve the same or larger operating field than non-contact cards using conventional PLM circuits, at least equivalent to 2,150 mm2 of antenna area for contactless cards. In some cases, the device does not require a dedicated NFC antenna at all, as long as it uses a metal case instead of a normal antenna.
This means that when device manufacturers use AS3921-equipped devices for contactless payments or ticket purchases, they can provide a better experience for consumers:
· More reliable connection with payment terminals, subway ticket gates and other devices containing NFC readers
· Perceive transactions faster because the product has a larger work area and coupling can begin when the device is farther away from the reader
· It is more convenient because the device does not need to be placed in a direction close to the card reader
The AS3921 complies with the ISO/IEC 14443 (Types A and B) standards and the FeliCaTM RFID protocol. Its superior NFC performance also makes it easier for manufacturers of wearable devices and other space-constrained devices to use contactless payment terminals in compliance with the EMVCo standard. When the readers used are not fully compatible with the NFC standard, the superior coupling capabilities achieved with the AS3921 provide better performance and device manufacturers can quickly interoperate with these readers. Amers Semiconductor's enhanced NFC technology is the only proven solution for portable and wearable devices. It is used by traffic operators in major cities such as Beijing, Guangdong and Shenzhen. There is no need to deploy different antennas in each city. .
The NFC analog front end AS3921 can be easily integrated into existing products and can be directly connected to the contactless interface of the secure element via the ACLB or NFC-WI interface. An electrically erasable read-only memory (EEPROM) on the chip allows the customer to select and program the chip settings themselves. The AS3921 can also be connected to an NFC tag or NFC interface chip.
In order to avoid the saturation of the reader and to achieve reliable operation in an environment with poor NFC transmission, the chip provides quality factor adjustment and automatic power control. This makes it easier for device manufacturers to interoperate with a variety of standard compatible and incompatible readers.
For wearables and mobile devices, the low-power AS3921 is ideal because frequent charging is one of the main considerations for users to choose a new generation of devices such as smart watches. The AS3921 wakes up the secure element when it detects the presence of the reader field, leaving the secure element in the off mode at other times.
Mark Dickson, marketing director of Amers Semiconductor's Wireless Connectivity Division, said: "The AS3911 in the new compact package enables non-contact payment functions for small and trendy devices such as smart watches and bracelets, marking non-contact payment performance. A major breakthrough. When using the AS3921 for secure NFC communication, users of these devices can use these devices to quickly, conveniently and reliably pay for items in the store."
Samples of the AS3921 NFC analog front end are now available. The demo board for the AS3921/22 is available at the Amers Semiconductor online store.
