Nest founder is difficult to leave the IoT business?

Nest Lab founder Tony Fadell is leaving, what is it? Why is it now? His departure message left a few questions: including the Internet of Things (IoT) challenge and Nest's positioning in the Alphabet hardware product strategy...

Tony Fadell announced on June 3rd that he would leave his Nest, as if he had thrown a shock to the company (or the parent company of Google). What caused Fadell to ask for it? Why did you choose this time? This departure message left a few questions.

First of all, Fadell is an American Silicon Valley celebrity who once worked for Apple and played a key role in the development of the iPod and iPhone. His engineering major and his reputation in Silicon Valley created the Nest for him. Net thermostats and smoke detectors - add a lot of charm and credibility. But without Fadell, what is left of Nest?

Nest founder will leave the Internet of Things business difficult?

Second, Google bought Nest for $3.2 billion in 2014, one of the largest acquisitions in the company's history; in many ways, Google's acquisition of Nest provides market momentum for the Internet of Things, after all, who does not want to be the next Nest ? Although Nest's products only have thermostats and smoke detectors, those products have beautiful design and networking capabilities, they are the pioneers of digital networking families in the future Internet of Things era...or we all think so.

Fadell's departure reflects the current challenges facing the Internet of Things. For companies like Nest, it's not that simple to develop a wireless hub that should be connected to various sensors and different home devices; According to industry sources, Nest has changed the direction of a wireless hub product code-named "Flintstone" for the past three years.

Third, Fadell said that although he will leave Nest, he will still be an advisor to Alphabet and Google co-founder Larry Page; what does this mean? Fadell's successor at Nest is Marwan Fawaz, who used to work for Motorola Mobility and Charter CommunicaTIons; it's worth noting that Fadell was once expected to play a central role in Alphabet's hardware strategy, but it didn't happen.

Neither Fadell nor Nest seems to be involved in Google's upcoming consumer electronics new product, Google Home; Google Home is a voice-activated home product like Amazon Echo that allows users to use Google via voice control. Search engines, play music streams, and handle daily tasks are expected to be available this evening.

However, a Nest spokesman pointed out that Google Home will be compatible with Nest products after listing: "We are working closely with Google's team responsible for the product to ensure the best experience for each other's products; Google Home will be able to work with Nest Compatible and able to control Nest products, similar to our integration with Amazon Echo."

So, what is the current hardware strategy for Alphabet? It seems that there is no Nest participation in its future development...Alphabet is likely to completely withdraw from the operation of Nest?

Where did it go wrong?

Let's go back to the original question: What caused Fadell to leave?

Some industry observers believe that Fadell's departure is inevitable; industry sources have revealed that there seems to be a problem of power dumping within Nest, and some unnamed people have broken the news to the media, complaining that Fadell's management style is too aggressive and too thin ( Micromanaging).

In March 2014, Nest had to recall smoke detectors for software defects. Fadell posted a notice on the Internet telling consumers that the algorithm error in Nest Wave gesture control was discovered by a design By waving the alarm off function, the user may completely turn off the alarm, which obviously raises security concerns. This is a mistake that Nest should not have.

What really made the situation worse was Nest's acquisition of the network camera startup Dropcam for $555 million in 2014; Nest's attempt to integrate Dropcam led to a large number of former Dropcam employees seeking technology from the team to the product. The priority of the quarrel is constant. Now, in addition to thermostats and smoke detectors, Nest has IP cameras, Nest Cam, and hardware and services that support hardware.

Nest's internal turmoil can be simply summarized as Fadell and Dropcam co-founders' management experience is not enough, and the bigger problem is that the relationship between Nest and Google is "cold."

According to industry sources, the Google Unit team responsible for the operation of Google executive Mario Queiroz rejected Fadell's request to participate in Google Home development; this rift means at least the same Nest and Google in Alphabet, and the hardware strategy is not consistent with each other. . After Fadell's departure, one thing is clear - Nest is no longer a shining star who can get endless resources from the parent company Alphabet.

Thread is Fadell's important achievement in the field of Internet of Things

However, despite the above dark side, Nest may lose the aura of the main push for the Internet of Things market, the industry still has to thank Fadell for spawning Thread.

Because Nest insists on the need to adopt IPv6 wireless network communication protocol, Thread Group was born; the industry organization developed Thread communication protocol, its task is to enable IoT smart home devices to communicate on the local wireless mesh network. Thread does not address the interoperability of the application layer (which is driven by other competing industry groups), but the organization is driving the IoT community, prompting industry players to start building around the agreement, at least at the network level. On the communication protocol.

Now, with or without Nest, the Thread Group has established itself. After completing the 1.0 specification, it also launched a product certification program. Although Fadell is out of the nest, Thread seems to be booming.
