According to eetimes.de, LinearTechnology has introduced an isolated LED controller with dynamic power factor correction (PFC). This is specifically designed to drive LEDs from 90V to 265V universal input range AC. The LT3799 is optimized for LED power from 4W to over 100W and is compatible with standard triac in-wall dimmers.
The LT3799's good current sensing solution regulates secondary currents without the need for an optocoupler. This not only reduces costs but also increases reliability. In addition, its single-stage PFC regulator requires only a minimum of external components. The LT3799's package is enhanced with heat-resistant MSOP-16E, which ensures that the controller provides a simple and compact solution for off-line LED applications.
The LT3799 has an 86% supply efficiency, eliminating the need for external heat dissipation from the driver IC. It can provide up to 0.977 active PFC if equipped with special internal circuitry. This has met the requirements of the Department of Energy (DOE) and the IEC61000-3-2 Harmonic Class C lighting equipment. The LT3799 can be used with standard in-wall triac dimmers without any noticeable flicker. In addition, its LED open and short circuit protection system ensures the long-term reliability of LED applications.
